Soul, Sequins, and Sisterhood: The Sapphires Sparkle at Bille Brown Theatre

The rhythm of 1960s soul is set to take over Brisbane as Queensland Theatre Company and Canberra Theatre Centre bring the legendary Australian musical, The Sapphires, to the stage. Running from 28 April to 24 May 2026, this vibrant new production at the Bille Brown Theatre marks a triumphant homecoming for a story that has become a cornerstone of Australian culture.

Written by Tony Briggs and directed by the acclaimed Wesley Enoch—who helmed the original 2004 debut—this staging breathes fresh life into the powerful true story of four young Yorta Yorta women.

A Journey from Country Victoria to Vietnam

Set in 1969, a pivotal era of social change, The Sapphires follows a Supremes-inspired girl group discovered by a city talent scout. Their journey takes them from the floorboards of regional dance halls to the frontlines of the Vietnam War, performing for American troops.

For Director Wesley Enoch, the play remains a vital reflection on how far the nation has come since First Nations people first secured the right to vote.

“It reminds us of how recent that history really is,” Enoch says. “At the same time, it’s full of warmth, humour and incredible soul music, and that’s what gives the play its joy.”

Honouring First Nations Voices

The story is deeply personal, inspired by the lived experiences of Tony Briggs’ mother, Laurel Robinson, and his aunties. This production also serves as a centrepiece for the 2026 season’s commitment to elevating First Nations artists.

Isaac Drandić, Queensland Theatre Company’s Head of First Nations Theatre, notes that the show is a perfect expression of celebration. “I wanted this season to honour and celebrate Aboriginal women… it’s an opportunity to elevate the voices and experiences of First Nations women while celebrating the incredible talent of our artists.”

A Fresh Generation of Talent

The 2026 production introduces a powerhouse cast, featuring the Queensland Theatre Company debuts of Ruby Henaway, Aurora Liddle-Christie, Tehya Makani, and Taeg Twist. Accompanied by a live band, the performers deliver soaring renditions of soul classics, including:

  • Respect
  • Ain’t No Mountain High Enough
  • The Shoop Shoop Song (It’s in His Kiss)
