State Library’s ‘Portraits After Dark’ Offers an Evocative Farewell to the Brisbane Portrait Prize

The State Library of Queensland (SLQ) recently pulled back the curtain for a spectacular, one-night-only event: Portraits After Dark. Held on the closing weekend of the celebrated Brisbane Portrait Prize, this exclusive evening transformed the library’s iconic spaces into a vibrant hub where art, music, and connection flourished.

This was more than just a final viewing; it was an opportunity to “Stare into the Soul of Brisbane” in a dynamic social setting. Attendees were invited to explore the Brisbane Portrait Prize Finalist Exhibition under the atmospheric glow of evening lights, accompanied by a rich tapestry of live performance.

A Fusion of Art and Sound

The evening was a masterclass in setting an ambient yet lively mood. The SLQ Gallery pulsed with an ambient soundtrack provided by a live DJ, creating the perfect backdrop for guests to contemplate the striking works on display. The musical journey continued in the Poinciana Lounge, where talented local musicians kept the atmosphere flowing, lending a warm, intimate energy to the space.

Perhaps the most engaging attraction was the Red Box, which was transformed into a bustling, live drawing studio. Throughout the night, artists worked in real time, capturing portraits and offering a fascinating, immediate glimpse into the creative process. This live element grounded the experience, connecting patrons directly to the craft and the artists behind the canvas.

Beyond the Canvas

‘Portraits After Dark’ fostered engagement beyond the main exhibition. A thoughtful pop-up bookshop featured a curated selection of titles from local and art-focused publishers, while hands-on, portrait-inspired activities provided a creative outlet for all skill levels.

Adding to the refined nature of the event, hospitality was key. Each entry included an individual antipasto box and a drink on arrival, with a cash bar available for further refreshments and unlimited soft drinks provided throughout the evening.

By connecting visitors directly with the artists, showcasing the work in a dynamic social context, and transforming the familiar architecture of the State Library, Portraits After Dark delivered on its promise. It was an evocative and fittingly memorable way to experience the Brisbane Portrait Prize and see the beautiful State Library “in a different light.”
