Queensland Symphony Orchestra Hits the Highway for 2026 Regional Tour

From Charleville to Cairns, the Queensland Symphony Orchestra is bringing live music, free community concerts and world-class performances to regional Queensland from May to August 2026. Queensland Symphony Orchestra (QSO) is once again spreading the joy of live orchestral music to regional, rural and remote communities across the state, with its 2026 touring program winding its way from May to August. Now in its third year of a five-year commitment, the tour visits Charleville, Chinchilla, Roma, Tara, Gladstone and Cairns — delivering community concerts, student workshops, professional development and gala performances along the way.

The Queensland Symphony Orchestra (QSO) has announced its 2026 regional touring program, an ambitious four-month journey bringing live orchestral music to regional, rural, and remote centres across the state. Running from May to August, the tour marks the third year of the orchestra’s dedicated five-year regional commitment.

The 2026 itinerary features a diverse mix of community concerts, student workshops, and gala performances reaching as far as Charleville, Chinchilla, Roma, Tara, Gladstone, and Cairns.

Deepening Community Connections

The program is built upon established initiatives designed to foster long-term musical growth and deep connections with local audiences.

  • The GEM Initiative (Gladstone): In partnership with Australia Pacific LNG, the Gladstone Enrichment through Music program arrives on 15 June. The week involves education and engagement with local students and teachers, culminating in the free Gladstone GEM Community in Concert on 18 June featuring the 13-piece QSO Connect Ensemble.
  • The CMRT Initiative (Western Queensland): Serving Chinchilla, Miles, Roma, and Tara, this initiative visits Western Queensland in May for skills development and returns in July for a performance tour with local musicians.

QSO Chief Executive Officer Michael Sterzinger noted that the tour offers a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with regional audiences. “These partnerships encourage a genuine love of orchestral music, inspires and educates a new generation of musicians, and shares the joy of live performance with music-lovers, regardless of where they call home,” Mr Sterzinger said.

Symphony Under the Stars

The 2026 touring program reaches a glittering finale with two major outdoor “Symphony Under the Stars” performances:

  • Gladstone (31 July): Led by conductor Tianyi Lu, the repertoire includes Copland’s iconic Fanfare for the Common Man, Joan Tower’s Fanfare for the Uncommon Woman, and selections from Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake.
  • Cairns (28 August): Hosted by Ed Le Broq with conductor Nil Venditti, the performance features Bernstein, Gershwin, and a world premiere by Atherton local Jonathan Platz.
