A Spin Through Time: The History of Brisbane’s Iconic Wheel

The towering presence of the Wheel of Brisbane at South Bank is a familiar sight to locals and tourists alike, providing breathtaking views of the city skyline and the sweeping Brisbane River. But its journey to becoming a beloved landmark has a history that predates its 2008 opening, with origins on the Gold Coast.

Initially located at Sea World on the Gold Coast, the giant observation wheel operated there in 2006. The Wheel was soon after dismantled and transported from the marine park to its new, and now permanent, home in the heart of Brisbane’s cultural precinct.

Organisers timed the official opening of the Wheel of Brisbane in August 2008 to coincide with two significant milestones: the 20th anniversary of Brisbane’s landmark World Expo 88 and the 150th anniversary of Queensland’s separation from New South Wales. They made its installation a key feature of the celebrations, and its immediate popularity ensured it would become a lasting fixture.

Designed by the Dutch company Wheels of Excellence, a world leader in the creation of observation wheels, the Wheel of Brisbane stands at an impressive 60 metres high. It features 42 fully enclosed, air-conditioned gondolas, each capable of carrying up to six adults and two children. A full rotation takes approximately 12 to 15 minutes, providing riders with an unobstructed view of the city.

Over the years, the Wheel has become an integral part of the city’s identity. It is a focal point for significant events and celebrations, often illuminated in vibrant colours to mark special occasions. Currently, it is known as the Channel Seven Wheel of Brisbane, reflecting a sponsorship agreement.

The structure has also weathered its share of challenges. During the devastating Brisbane floods of January 2011, floodwaters inundated the base of the Wheel. Still, crews successfully repaired it, and it continues to operate as a premier attraction for the city.

From its beginnings at a theme park to its current prominent position on the South Bank skyline, the Wheel of Brisbane has cemented its place in the city’s recent history, offering a unique perspective of the Queensland capital to millions of visitors.
