A Look Under the Skin: ‘BODY WORLDS’ Arrives in Brisbane to Unpack the Anatomy of Happiness

What does happiness look like? For the first time in Australia, a groundbreaking exhibition invites us to look beneath the surface to find out.

BODY WORLDS – The Anatomy of Happiness made its Australian debut in Brisbane on Thursday, June 12, at Uptown. This unique exhibition, which has captivated over 56 million people in cities worldwide, utilises real human specimens to reveal the astonishing connection between our health choices, emotions, and overall well-being.

Developed by Dr Gunther von Hagens, the inventor of the preservation process known as plastination, and curated by physician Dr Angelina Whalley, the exhibition goes beyond simple anatomy. It utilises science-backed insights to demonstrate how our feelings—from joy and love to stress and fear—visibly affect our bodies. Through a series of powerful and authentic displays, visitors can see the profound difference between healthy and diseased organs, a striking reminder of how lifestyle choices shape our health.

“Through plastination, we’re able to present the human body memorably and beautifully so that people can learn about anatomy, disease, and mental health,” says Dr Whalley. “What it uncovers is truly fascinating—and we’ve seen visitors around the world leave with a new motivation to live more consciously.”

What to Expect

More than just a science lesson, The Anatomy of Happiness is an immersive experience designed to encourage reflection and introspection.

Highlights include:

  • Whole-Body Displays: See the human form in motion and at rest, illustrating the complexity and resilience of our anatomy.
