Brisbane's inner-city voice since 2014
W Brisbane's W Exchange program brings Tokyo's JANAI COFFEE and a W Osaka chef to Brisbane on 23 and 24 October, with Japan-inspired menus running to 16 November.
W Brisbane is bringing the kinetic energy and understated craft of modern Japan to North Quay with W Exchange, an ambitious, hotel-wide cultural residency running through to 16 November 2026.
Developed in partnership with sister property W Osaka, alongside Tokyo cocktail institution JANAI COFFEE, ODAYA Tea, Mt Fuji Whiskey, and Ukiyo Spirits, the month-long showcase spans subterranean cocktail culture, collaborative riverside dining, and wellness rituals. The timing is particularly deliberate: Japan currently ranks as Brisbane’s fifth-largest inbound market—with visitation surging by a record 33.7 per cent—while nearly one million Australians travelled to Japan in the year leading to July 2026.
Headlining the beverage program is Tokyo’s viral subterranean cocktail lounge JANAI COFFEE, marking its Australian debut. Tucked beneath an unassuming neighbourhood coffee shop in Tokyo’s Ebisu district, the venue has developed an international cult following for its elusive digital entry puzzle.
For two nights only—Friday 23 and Saturday 24 October—JANAI COFFEE’s Head Bartender Kento Mukai will take over Living Room Bar. Mukai’s menu bridges precision coffee extraction and spirit craft, featuring a dedicated "cross-culture" espresso martini blending JANAI’s bespoke ingredients with Australian wild honey.
Guests visiting Living Room Bar through to 16 November can explore the residency cocktail list by tracing a secret digital portal on their smartphones to unlock the hidden menu.
Over at signature restaurant The Lex, New York grill sensibilities meet Japanese culinary discipline. On Friday 23 and Saturday 24 October, Nara-born chef Kenji Haneda flies in from W Osaka to collaborate with The Lex kitchen team for an exclusive Four Hands dinner (from $199 per person).
The takeover menu highlights include:
After the takeover and until 16 November, The Lex will continue serving an adapted multi-course tasting menu (from $120 per person), featuring Tasmanian salmon tartare, grilled Moreton Bay bug bathed in yuzu sake cream, wagyu sirloin with truffle sukiyaki, and matcha warabi mochi.
The dining experience can be paired with bespoke cocktail infusions, including The Kazan (a smoky pour of tequila, mezcal, mango, pineapple, and Amaro Montenegro) and the citrus-forward Yuhi-25 (a martini profile of bright yuzu, lime, and rum).
Beyond the headline takeovers, W Exchange weaves through every level of the hotel until mid-November:
