Brisbane's inner-city voice since 2014
The world premiere cast is revealed, with the Melbourne season extended to 16 May 2027 and a Queensland Theatre link behind the scenes.
The stage version of The Castle has found its Kerrigans, and its Melbourne season now runs to 16 May 2027.
Producers Michael Cassel Group and Working Dog announced the cast of the world premiere on Monday. Justin Smith (Heartbreak High, The Artful Dodger, Wentworth) plays family patriarch Darryl, with Christie Whelan Browne (Muriel's Wedding The Musical, Kimberly Akimbo, All About Eve) as Sal.
Ed Oxenbould (Puberty Blues, Paper Planes) makes his professional theatre debut as Dale, the youngest son and narrator. AACTA Award-winning actor Joel Jackson plays Wayne, recent WAAPA graduate Stephanie Graham plays Tracey, and Marcus McKenzie plays Steve. Roman Delo (Bump, Home and Away) joins as Tracey's husband, Con Petropoulous.
The play was written for the stage by the film's original creators, Rob Sitch, Tom Gleisner, Santo Cilauro and Jane Kennedy, and is directed by Paige Rattray. It opens at Her Majesty's Theatre in Melbourne from March 2027. Michael Cassel Group says new performances have gone on sale after what it calls record-breaking demand.
"From the moment we saw this cast together, we knew we'd found our family," Kennedy said.
For now, nothing. The release invites audiences to see the show "first in Melbourne", and no Brisbane season has been announced.
There is a Queensland thread behind the scenes, though. According to the production's website, Rattray was Associate Artistic Director at Queensland Theatre. She also directed the world premiere of the musical Fangirls, which opened at Queensland Theatre in September 2019 as a co-production with Belvoir and Brisbane Festival.
We covered the show's original announcement in July.
