La Cenerentola - Opera Queensland 2026

Rossini’s Sparkling ‘La Cenerentola’ Returns to the Concert Hall for Brisbane Bel Canto

The stage is set for a night of wit, whimsy, and world-class vocals as Opera Queensland’s acclaimed production of La Cenerentola (Cinderella) returns to the Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC). Opening tonight at the Concert Hall, this revival promises to recapture the magic that earned it rave reviews during its 2025 debut.

Part of the vibrant Brisbane Bel Canto festival, this production takes Gioachino Rossini’s legendary score and breathes new life into the timeless story. Audiences expecting glass slippers and pumpkin carriages may be surprised; this version swaps traditional fairy-tale tropes for a more grounded, human comedy filled with clever disguises, theatrical mischief, and the enduring power of kindness.

A Tale of Heart and Humour The narrative follows the gentle Angelina (Cinderella), played by the brilliant Margarita Gritskova. Overlooked by her selfish stepsisters and her blustering father, Don Magnifico (James Roser), Angelina’s fortunes shift when she encounters Prince Ramiro (Mert Süngü). In a story where the “heart that shines” is more important than a fitting slipper, the production balances its sentimental core with high-energy comedy.

The antics of Don Magnifico and the Prince’s valet, Dandini (Jeremy Kleeman), provide a wealth of laughs, ensuring the performance is as entertaining as it is musically sophisticated.

An Elite Creative Team Under the baton of conductor Richard Mills, the Queensland Symphony Orchestra and the Opera Queensland Chorus provide the lush, rhythmic foundation for Rossini’s “sparkling and exquisite” music. The visual landscape is equally impressive, with direction and set design by Laura Hansford, complemented by the intricate work of costume designers Karen Cochet and Bianca Bulley.

Event Details The production runs for approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes, including an interval. Following tonight’s premier, a subsequent performance is scheduled for Saturday, 2 May.

Whether you are a seasoned opera-goer or looking for a delightful introduction to the genre, La Cenerentola offers a rare and joyous reminder that, through music and kindness, fairytales really can come true.
