Tableau of Tragedy: W Brisbane and Queensland Ballet Partner for 'A Poisoned Court'

By Phillipe Blake·31 August 2026·2 min read

W Brisbane and Queensland Ballet transformed The Lex into a gothic-inspired Elsinore for a one-night-only immersive dinner and Pas de Deux, marking the start of an annual partnership.

High above the Brisbane River at The Lex, luxury hospitality and world-class dance collided in a dark, multi-sensory spectacle that rewrote the rules of the traditional degustation.

Marking W Brisbane's appointment as the Official Hotel Partner of Queensland Ballet, 'A Poisoned Court' transformed the hotel's flagship restaurant into an immersive, gothic-inspired Elsinore. Timed as an exclusive encore to Queensland Ballet's acclaimed season of Hamlet, the one-night-only event invited guests dressed in royal mourning attire to step directly into Shakespeare's tragic world.

Between five meticulously curated courses by Executive Chef John Kennedy, patrons sat mere feet from the action as Principal Artist Lucy Green (Ophelia) and First Company Artist Joshua Ostermann (Hamlet) performed an intimate Pas De Deux excerpt on a custom-engineered stage inside the venue.

"Ballet should not only be experienced when the curtain rises," noted Queensland Ballet Artistic Director Ivan Gil-Ortega. "It should inspire curiosity, spark conversation, and become part of the cultural life of our city."

Storytelling on the Plate

Every course reflected key narrative beats of the production, celebrating local Queensland provenance paired with Mora Wines:

On Arrival: Albany rock oysters with champagne & caviar mignonette, house sourdough with whipped black butter and fermented black garlic.

First Course: Smoked venison with pickled blueberries, candied walnuts, and red wine jam — served and smoked tableside over mesquite and cherrywood.

Second & Third Courses: Torched Moreton Bay scallops with blood orange and salmon caviar, followed by local coral trout over saffron emulsion and grilled shallots.

Fourth Course: Citrus-fed Queensland Wagyu with wagyu-fat potato mash and freshly shaved black truffle.

Dessert Finale: The 'Poisoned Apple' yuzu mousse with green apple core over chocolate soil, paired with a dramatic 'Poisoned Chalice' cocktail.

Extending the Experience

For those looking to experience the partnership beyond the dinner, W Brisbane has integrated Queensland Ballet across the property. The Living Room Bar is currently featuring an interactive, ballet-inspired cocktail menu — including 'The Poison' (a colour-changing Ink Gin blend) and 'The Ghost' (served with an edible candle) — alongside express two-course pre-theatre menus at The Lex.

With its bold fusion of fine dining, moody atmosphere, and intimate live performance, 'A Poisoned Court' marks the start of an annual tradition — W Brisbane and Queensland Ballet plan to stage this immersive concept dinner each year around the standout production of Queensland Ballet's season, with further creative collaborations between the two planned throughout the year ahead.
