Brisbane's inner-city voice since 2014
Olivia Rodrigo's “expectations” remix with Chappell Roan is out now, and the video turns it into a retro game show hosted by David Byrne.
Olivia Rodrigo has released a remix of "expectations" featuring Chappell Roan, and the music video turns the collaboration into a retro game show.
Out now via Interscope Records, the remix is Roan's first-ever feature, and it was produced by Dan Nigro, who has worked with both women. The original comes from Rodrigo's third album, you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love, which opened at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with 485,000 first-week units, the biggest solo debut of 2026. It also topped charts in 17 countries, Australia among them.
The track itself is bright and bubbly, but the subject matter has more bite. It is a song about women who gave their hearts away freely, got let down, and decided to hold out for more. Rodrigo's verse is about a man she talked herself into, while Roan's is about a woman who promised to call and didn't. The chorus is shared, with “boy” and “guy” swapped for “girl”, and so is the lesson: past mistakes are just new information, and love should meet reasonable expectations. It is a message of self-respect, and it sits comfortably alongside the pair's work for women and girls.

The video, directed by Bardia Zeinali, is called "The Big Expectations Show" and works its way through four games borrowed from 80s and 90s television. The opening round is a word-puzzle game in which Rodrigo plays three characters. The second, the “Sister Squabbles”, is a team contest that sets Rodrigo's crew against Roan's. David Byrne hosts, with a special appearance from Nigro.
Limited-edition 7" vinyls, CDs and cassettes are on sale through both artists' stores.
There is a charitable thread running through the pair's year. Rodrigo's Daisy Chain Fields, a women-led day of music at Great Park in Irvine, California, on 29 August, raised $20 million for 10 charities working for women and girls, and Roan was on the bill. Later this month Roan hosts her own two-day fundraiser in Los Angeles, The Super Graphic Spectacular and The Super Graphic Block Party, with net ticket sales going to The Midwest Princess Project, which supports trans youth and LGBTQ+ communities.
