Eight Years in the Making — Gin Wigmore Returns with Beautiful Mess

Eight years is a long time in music. Careers stall, artists pivot, audiences move on. Gin Wigmore did none of those things — she lived, and then she made a record about it.

Beautiful Mess, the New Zealand icon's fourth studio album, is out now via Universal Music Australia. It's her most personal work to date, and by some distance her most adventurous — a double-sided record that doesn't so much balance contrasts as lean into them fully.

Two Sides, One Truth

The album's concept is as honest as its title. Side A is the 'Beautiful' — soft, country-inflected soundscapes that draw from the lineage of Lucinda Williams, Loretta Lynn and Tammy Wynette. Side B is the 'Mess' — full-throttle rock anthems that rip the record wide open.

It's not a gimmick. The split reflects the actual decade Wigmore has lived through: love and loss, divorce and motherhood, the slow work of rebuilding yourself. Beautiful Mess is the document of all of it — calm and chaos, light and dark, not in opposition but in honest coexistence.

Made in the Desert

The album was recorded largely in a single whirlwind week at a remote Palm Springs desert studio, alongside longtime collaborators Dave Goodison and Steven Padin. The result finds Wigmore at her most self-assured — fearless in the way that only someone who has genuinely been through it can be.

New single 'Tip Of My Tongue' captures that tension precisely. A track about the gap between wanting change and accepting that it can't be forced, Wigmore describes it as "a balancing act between feeling stuck in the mundane cycle of day-to-day life and hoping that love, with full unconditional acceptance, will overcome any feelings of mediocrity and complacency."

"It's the bittersweet realisation," she adds, "that a person can only change on their own accord, through self-belief and the desire to do so."

An Undeniable Force

Almost two decades into her career, Wigmore's credentials speak for themselves — 630 million streams, four multi-platinum albums across New Zealand and Australia, six New Zealand Music Awards, and sync placements on Grey's Anatomy, Orange Is the New Black and Teen Wolf. She has built her career entirely on her own terms, and Beautiful Mess sounds exactly like that.
