Capture the Moment: 35mm: A Musical Exhibition Arrives at QPAC

BRISBANE — The Queensland Academy of Excellence in Musical Theatre (QAEMT), in association with Griffith University, is set to transform the Cremorne Theatre into a living gallery this May.

Directed by the acclaimed Jason Klarwein, 35mm: A Musical Exhibition is a high-octane, multimedia song cycle that blurs the lines between photography and performance. Inspired by the raw, evocative snapshots of American photographer Matthew Murphy, the production features music and lyrics by Ryan Scott Oliver.

A New Lens on Musical Theatre

Unlike traditional book musicals, 35mm is a non-linear exploration of the human experience. Each song is a “genie let loose from a lamp”, inspired by a specific photograph. The show weaves through a dizzying collection of memories, altered states, and urban voyeurism, touching on themes ranging from hilarious relationships to the “bittersweet pain of nostalgia”.

“In a world of instant digitisation… the analogue nature of historic camera photography delivers an almost zen response,” says Director Jason Klarwein. “The composition of a photo lies not in the editing but in the taking… Herein lies the ephemeral action of 35mm.”

Creative Powerhouse

The production brings together a formidable creative team:

  • Director: Jason Klarwein (Artistic Director of The Grin and Tonic Theatre Troupe).
  • Musical Director: David Young (Music Supervisor for the 2025 tour of The Book of Mormon).
  • Choreographer: Dan Venz.
  • Production Designer: Josh McIntosh.
